Luke Bedford and the London Sinfonietta at Wien Modern

London SinfoniettaLuke Bedford is in Vienna for a performance of his Man Shoots Strangers from Skyscraper. Franck Ollu conducts the London Sinfonietta.

The concert, which is part of the Wien Modern festival, is the ensemble’s first in Vienna for 15 years.

Also on the programme is Harrison Birtwistle’s Silbury Air, as well as works by George Benjamin, Simon Holt and Thomas Adès.

Jay Schwartz: Music for Saxophone and Piano

Jay SchwartzWe’ve just published an early work by Jay Schwartz: Music for Saxophone and Piano.

Thomas Snydacker and Liz Ames perform the piece tonight at the Arizona State University.

The piece was written for the saxophonist Harry Kinrose White, who will also be performing the work in Zurich this autumn. More details in our performance calendar.

Haas world première in Munich

Pinakothek der ModernePart two of Georg Friedrich Haas’ SCHWEIGEN – II. Lampedusa for soprano and mezzo-soprano – is given its world première this Sunday at the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich.

Soloists from the Neue Vocalsolisten perform as part of the Escalier du Chant project by the artist Olaf Nicolai.

Rihm at the ZaterdagMatinee in Amsterdam

Christian MiedlThe iconic ZaterdagMatinee concert series in Amsterdam begins a special season dedicated to Wolfgang Rihm this Saturday.

During the forthcoming concert series, works by Rihm will be included in eight of the matinee concerts presented by the Dutch Radio at the Concertgebouw.

The series begins with the world première of Rihm’s Der Maler träumt for baritone and ensemble given by Christian Miedl and the Asko|Schönberg ensemble, alongside a performance of Male über Male 2 with clarinettist Jörg Widmann. Reinbert de Leeuw conducts. Music by Schreker and Widmann will also be performed.

Besides Feldman – new CD

Besides Feldmancol legno’s new CD, Besides Feldman, is now available. The project, led by musician and producer Patrick Pulsinger, was part of the Feld(man) Forschung series at the Wien Modern 2010 festival.

The Viennese weekly newspaper Der Falter talks of the “considerable attraction” of the music.

Tonight, they present the Austrian première of Friedrich Cerha’s Paraphrase on the beginning of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony.

Wolfgang Rihm in Donaueschingen

Donaueschingen FestivalThe 2011 Donaueschingen Festival starts tomorrow with a concert given by the RSO Baden-Baden and Freiburg together with the Ensemble MusikFabrik.

Emilio Pomàrico conducts the world première of Wolfgang Rihm’s “Séraphin”-Symphonie. The work is the latest incarnation of a “complex” of works that carry a reference to Antonin Artaud and his work.

This Thursday, On Comparative Meteorology for orchestra is given its French premiere by the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg conducted by Pascal Rophé.

On Saturday, the SWR Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart performs Contrebande (On Comparative Meteorology II), conducted by Anton Zapf.

Walt Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles

The US premiere of Georg Friedrich Haas’ chants oubliés for chamber orchestra takes place tonight in Los Angeles.

Otto Tausk conducts the LA Phil New Music Group at the Walt Disney Concert Hall.

The title refers to late works by Franz Liszt (Valses oubliés, Romance oubliée) – Liszt’s technique of presenting one-part melodies in a different sound environment (often that of the piano) is applied here to the possibilities of the chamber orchestra.
