Gramophone’s Jeremy Nicholas has recently reviewed CPO’s release of Franz Liszt Organ Arrangements, which includes arrangements of Fantasia and Fugue on Ad nos, ad salutarem undam, Orpheus, Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen, and Prelude and Fugue on B-A-C-H. Franz Liszt used the chorale Ad nos, ad salutarem undam,originally from Giacomo Meyerbeer’s opera Le Prophète, as the basis for a Fantasia and Fugue. The “Prophet Fugue”, as he called it, is one of the most impressive works of a secular character in organ literature. Marcel Dupré, one of the great 20th century masters of the organ, arranged it highly effectively for orchestra; it was considered lost until it was rediscovered and performed again in 2007. The programme features a performance of Liszt’s Ad nos, ad salutarem undam in the arrangement for organ and orchestra by Marcel Dupré which is published by UE.
Martin Haselböck edited the work for our new edition, and he conducts the performance with Christian Schmitt at the organ and the Deutsche Radiophilharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern.
