This work was commissioned in memory of 100 Years of the First World War. A short scene from my opera Die Antilope (2013/2014) is taken as the musical starting point. With new, dynamic ideas, this is then developed exponentially in this three-part orchestral work while continually treading a line between swirling orchestral density and an iridescent delicacy that comes close to that of chamber music. Johannes Maria Staud’s Moment, Leute, Moment will receive its German première on 7 May at the Staatstheater Darmstadt. Will Humburg conducts the Staatsorchester Darmstadt.

Staud receives the Coup de Coeur des Jeunes Mélomanes

Congratulations to Johannes Maria Staud, who was awarded the Coup de Coeur des Jeunes Mélomanes for his work Oskar (Towards a Brighter Hue II) on 4 October by the Fondation Prince Pierre de Monaco.

The work is dedicated to Midori, and was premièred by the renowned violinist and the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra in 2014 at Lucerne Festival.

Midori will perform the work’s Japanese première on 19 October at the Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Sylvain Cambreling conducts the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra. The Austrian-Korean Philharmonic (Soyoung Yoon, vln; cond. Chungki Min) will soon tour Oskar (Towards a Brighter Hue II), for more information visit our performance calendar.

September will see three world premières by the composer: Auf die Stimme der weißen Kreide premières on 19 September in Strasbourg, Wasserzeichen on 20 September in Cologne.

Last but not least, Ensemble Modern premières the installation-based concert performance Specter of the Gardenia oder Der Tag wird kommen – an artistic venture by Staud and poet Josef Winkler – at the steirischer herbst opening on 25 September in Graz – we are excited!

Johannes Maria Staud’s Donum will be premièred by cellist Marc Coppey on 22 March at the Amphithéâtre Paris. Altogether, Coppey will play 10 commissions by the Philharmonie de Paris, and, together with 6 cellists, he will also perform Boulez’ Messagesquisse.

Johannes Maria Staud is this year’s composer-in-residence at the Lucerne Festival, which runs from 15 August until 14 September. Among the works performed by the composer will be the world premières of his new violin concerto Oskar (Towards a Brighter Hue II) (performed by “Artiste étoile” Midori and the Luzerner SO) and his opera Die Antilope (libretto: Durs Grünbein).

love songs without words, dedicated to the ensemble recherche

During preparations for their 25th anniversary in 2010, the ensemble recherche came to the conclusion that “There are no love songs anymore!”. So they request such pieces for the celebration from various composer friends; more than 30 love songs were written in the process and more are in progress: one could almost speak of a new “trend”. WERGO has recently released a two-and-a-half-hour double-CD set that features 30 love songs that are dedicated to the ensemble recherche – an ensemble that, since its founding in 1985, has premièred more than 500 works and released about 50 CDs, many of which have been awarded international prizes including the annual German Critics’ Award and the Diapason d’Or.

Their latest CD, which features works by Georg Friedrich Haas, Johannes Maria Staud and Hans Zender, has been highly praised by critics and public alike (“ensemble recherche’s amorous collection reclaims the love song from the embrace of pop music”, Andrew Clements for The Guardian) and already makes us hope for a follow-up CD.

Johannes Maria Staud: On Comparative Meteorology

Johannes Maria Staud (c) Mateo TaibonThe New York Times has reviewed last week’s performance of Johannes Maria Staud’s On Comparative Meteorology, describing it as a “colorful and highly engaging work [that] conjures moments of Surrealism, impish humor and foreboding — sometimes all at once.” The concert was performed by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (cond. Franz Welser-Möst) at Carnegie Hall.

Ground Breakers with Staud and Berio at the Stuttgart Ballet

Further performances will take place on 1, 7, 8, 10, 15 and 18 December.

Staud on Segue:

“When you tell people you’re working at the moment on a piece for cello often you find yourself being asked: ‘Ah, so you mean a cello concerto?’ No, I always answer – not a cello concerto! A music for cello and orchestra.

Perhaps, in the beginning, I coined this expression just as an aid for myself. Naturally I might also have called the work Piece for Cello and Orchestra – or quite simply Cello and Orchestra, as for example Morton Feldman did. Or I could have decided on retro-modern titles like Confrontation, Constellation, …(con)cert(are), or even chosen the totally post-modern Symphonic Sketches for Violoncello and Orchestra.

Belgian première of K’in

Pascal Gallois and the Hugo Wolf Quartet will perform the Belgian première of Johannes Maria Staud’s K’in on 10 November at the Concertgebouw in Bruges. The composer has dedicated he piece for bassoon and string quartet to Gallois and the quartet. Afterwards, Gallois will perform Celluloid for bassoon.

Staud on K’in:

In the Mayan language, K’in means “sun.” It is also the smallest unit in the Mayan calendar, corresponding to one day.
